Women: Beware Two Parallel Myths!

“The Perfect Lie”—Tiffany Webster’s dynamic talk (in the “Hope Works” series on the Mormon Channel) brought it all back. As she described her idealistic goals and how she chased perfection (in both looks and performance) only to crash in discouragement, I realized that young women today face the same dilemma I faced so many years ago. But perhaps the media makes the challenges even greater now. What intrigues me is the similarity between two myths that all women deal with every day.


Parallel Myths

In his October 2005 conference talk “To Young Women,” Elder Holland spoke of how the media brutally bombards us with the false message that looks are everything and that only one size and “look” is optimum. This message is impossible to miss in movies, television, fashion magazines and advertisements—and leaves most women feeling a terrible sense of not measuring up.
